Local charities to benefit from Bird Luckin

Chartered Accountants and business advisers Bird Luckin is the latest Essex-based company to take advantage of the Government-funded Match Challenge to increase the amount of money available to local charities.

The Bird Luckin Community Fund will be managed by Essex Community Foundation, the local grant-making charitable trust that manages funds on behalf of businesses, individuals and public agencies. The Foundation has distributed over £13 million to charities in Essex since it was established in 1996 and currently manages 50 funds, all supporting local charities helping local people.

Presenting the initial cheque for £5,000 on behalf of the firm, Bird Luckin Directors Alan Radford and Gayner Smith explained: “We wanted to do something which the whole team can be a part of, and which will have a lasting effect to support some of the smaller, less well known charities in our community.”

Bird Luckin has offices in Chelmsford and Stansted, and the company has a long history in the county, which started when James Luckin of Luckin and Sheldrake went in to business as an accountant in Chelmsford in 1870. Following a merger in 1976 with Bird & Partners and another merger in 1990, the name of the firm became Bird Luckin.

Laura Warren OBE DL, Chief Executive at Essex Community Foundation said: “We are delighted that such a high profile local company as Bird Luckin has made this long-term commitment to the local community. They have chosen a great time to ‘give’, as the Foundation is managing the Government’s Grassroots Grants and Endowment Match Challenge. This means that all donations – if Gift Aided – can be almost doubled, and corporate donations can be uplifted by 50 per cent.”
