Barrie Bids Farewell After Half a Century
Bird Luckin said farewell to one of the longest-serving team members in the company’s history recently, when Barrie Goodey retired from the firm after almost 50 year’s service.
Barrie joined Luckin and Sheldrake on 12 September 1960, and began working in the company’s Braintree office; when he joined the firm, Barrie said he was paid the princely sum of £182 per annum, which quickly increased to £200 per annum to cover his bus fares!
He added that his daily charge-out rate at that time was two guineas; when someone suggested that this was equivalent to approximately £2.20 per day, he replied: “Just to be pedantic, two guineas is exactly £2.10 – I wouldn’t want to be accused of over charging!”
At the time Luckin and Sheldrake had offices in Braintree, Chelmsford, Dunmow and Witham, and after 10 years in Braintree, Barrie moved to the Dunmow offices, where he has continued to work, while also helping out at the Chelmsford office from time to time.
In 1976 Luckin and Sheldrake merged with Brentwood-based Bird and Partners to form Bird Luckin and Sheldrake, and a further merger in 1990 led to the current company name of Bird Luckin.
Bird Luckin Director John Gallant paid tribute to Barrie’s outstanding commitment and contribution to both the company and its clients. “Barrie’s dedication to the firm over five decades has been astounding,” said John. “As a firm we are very proud of our traditions and our history – we can trace the start of company all the way back to 1870, when James Luckin of Luckin and Sheldrake started business as an accountant in Chelmsford.
“So we really value the fact that members of the team can stay with the company while still developing themselves and their careers. It may be increasingly unusual in the current business environment for people to stay with the same firm throughout their career, but we know a sense of fulfillment and the opportunity to take on new skills and challenges encourages commitment to the business from our staff. That’s not just good for members of the team, it’s good for the business as a whole, and it’s also good for clients, who can build a relationship with our people.
